What strikes me about this photo is that the pelican, which had been preening itself, paused to look up at the camera. Don't you love moments like those?

This is one of my entries to #Zoo-photographers' Zoo Photographer of the Year 2012 contest, featuring animals from the zoo. (Since there was a "crate"/"pier" theme where these pelicans were, I'm assumed they belonged to the zoo, as opposed to the duck and anhinga visitors.)
